We never imagined the party you could have when a few thousand music-crazed Texans migrate north to Steamboat Springs, Colorado for a few days of song, snow and, uh, lots of Tito’s and beer. Steamboat’s Music Fest was great. It was our first time to meet lots of the guys who are playing around Texas and we had a grand time hanging and singing old songs late into the morning hours.
We learned that snow banks are dangerous in the wee morning hours, cowboy boots don’t mix well with snow, and that $2 million tour buses are REAL nice on the inside. Ray Wylie Hubbard, Reckless Kelly and the guys in Cross Canadian Ragweed were kind enough to have us up on stage with them at different times during their shows. It was a blast. We met tons of new fans too and hope to see all of y’all back home down the line.

After 3 days of no sleep and bleeding fingers, we headed out through a snow storm to get to a show at a theater in Carbondale. We love Carbondale. We’ve done a few shows there over the past year or so, plus a really killer Mountain Fair Festival last summer. We made it through the snow, the show sold out, and it was one hell of a party for a theater show. More like an ass-shaking hippie love fest. Lots of fun! At the start of the show we saw people in seats, but 30 seconds into the first song everybody was on their feet with ants in their pants. Carbondale knows how to party. Lots of thanks to Amy and KDNK, Nelson and Dos Gringos and THE REDTONES.
In Denver, we played a really great room called The Soiled Dove. Makes me think of Dertybird. It’s a high class joint with great sound and they treated us right. As we rolled up to the show, we found out that the opener got stuck in the snow and wasn’t going to make it. This was a bummer, until Ray Benson and Asleep at the Wheel called the venue to ask if they could get on the guest list to check out our show. Apparently they were playing there the next night and had a night off. We were thrilled that they wanted to come and hear us play, and then we heard that the guys at the Soiled Dove asked Ray and Asleep at the Wheel to open for us. Holy Sh!t!! So almost 200 people showed up for the show (which was great – thanks to all our friends in the Denver area helping to promote the show), and they get the nice surprise of a 30 minute set by Asleep at the Wheel before we play. And then Ray Benson sat in on guitar and blew our minds for a few songs during our show. Definitely a night to remember.
We debated on maybe retiring after Asleep at the Wheel opened for us, but decided that Albuquerque, New Mexico needed some love. So the next day we headed down the road to Puccini’s Golden West Saloon. We weren’t sure how the turnout would be, but after soundcheck about a hundred people came out to see us play. The room was full and the show was a blast. We really felt hooked up and had a great time. Thanks to Neal Copperman for putting on the show and promoting everything. It was nice meeting all of our friends in New Mexico. We can’t wait to get back.
It was only a week but felt like a month of good times. We can’t wait to see everybody back on the trail in the Rocky Mountains. We’re hoping to get back in April or May.
Until then, Peace, from the Heathens.
